The seed that grew to become the Alexander Foundation was planted during the summer of 2016 by Alexander Lindgren Lukic together with his brother Nikola and mother Maria, in room 19, section 33 at Helsingborg's general hospital. The foundation's aim is to increase the quality of life for severely ill young adults who are hospitalised during extended periods of time or restricted in other ways by their illness. What qualifies as increased quality of life is up to each individual to judge for themselves. Our hope is to contribute to some form of normality in an abnormal situation, make every day a little easier, or simply create a moment of joy. Aid from the foundation is given to individuals between the ages of 18 to 30, who are hospitalized or due to other medical reasons are unable to take part in everything society has to offer. Funds are primarily given to cancer diagnosed applicants, however, there are possibilities for other applicants to seek funds. For more information go to the Applications page.

Background

On September 4th, 2013 life took a drastic turn for 19-year-old Alexander when he was diagnosed with stage four colorectal cancer.

Alexander lived in Stockholm where he studied Political Science and Economics at Stockholms University. His free time was devoted to his friends and training. Alex was passionate about fitness and health and had been a competitive boxer during his teenage years. Young and ambitious with his whole life ahead of him, he received news that would change the rest of his life in a way that he couldn't imagine.

During two years time Alex had experienced stomach pains and on several occasions had visited both health centers and hospitals only to be told that there was nothing wrong with him, despite him expressing his own concerns about cancer symptoms. He was instead told that he was a stressed and ambitious teenager. Therefore he was shocked when he was examined for a suspected bowel disease which turned out to be colorectal cancer in the final stage.

The following three years consisted of several surgeries and treatments leading to many complications. Alex was hospitalised for almost all of these years. During this period the idea of starting a foundation was born. It was Alexander's final wish that we, his mother and brother, would run a foundation to help the many other young adults in his situation. Up until the end, Alex was engaged in the creation of this charity and the will to make a difference as well as helping other was his driving force. He realized that he most likely would never recover from his illness and be able to share his story or run this charity. It was, therefore, his final wish that we would carry on his vision, making life a little easier for those in an extremely difficult situation.
